All available information on the most important metal- and diamond deposits in the Arctic has been assembled in a book (accompanied by a map) and in a database. These sources provide information on 28 diamond deposits and 207 large, very large and potentially large metal deposits, in regions north of 60oN in eight countries in the Arctic.

There are also troves of metals and minerals, including gold, diamonds, copper, iron, zinc, and uranium. However, these are not easy to get at. Starting a mine in the Arctic can be an iceberg of costs: short shipping seasons, melting permafrost, summer swamps, polar bears, and -50 degree temperatures make the Arctic tough to be economic. Several metallic and non-metallic minerals as well as and coal resources can be found in the Arctic. The exploitation of these resources is not a recent phenomenon, however due to technical development and decreasing permafrost and sea ice extends these resources are becoming more accessible. The Arctic zone of the Earth is a major source of mineral resources for the future development of science and technology. It contains a large supply of strategic mineral deposits, including rare earths, copper, phosphorus, niobium, platinum-group elements, and other critical metals.

This map shows the different gas, oil, and mining resources in the Arctic. Receeding ice cover will influence accessibility to mineral and energy resources both  The Arctic contains a wealth of petroleum and mineral resources. Currently, the region produces about one tenth of the world's oil and a quarter of its natural gas.

Ferromanganese crusts, manganese nodules, phosphorites, and hydrothermal vent deposits, which occur from the Arctic to the Antarctic, are enriched in many metals including those currently deemed societally critical.

The natural resources of the Arctic are the mineral and animal resources within the Arctic Circle that can provide utility or economic benefit to humans. The mineral resources include major reserves of oil and natural gas, large quantities of minerals including iron ore, copper, nickle, zinc phosphates and diamonds.

The Russian Arctic is the source for about 80 percent of this oil and virtually all of the natural gas; Arctic Canada, Alaska, and Norway are the other leading producers.
